How to Say Hello in Greek

Published in It’s all Greek to me

Say "Yassou! Ti kanis?". Pronounce it "YAH-soo! Ti kanis?".

This phrase is best suited for informally saying hello to one person. Smile as you say it – be friendly!". You can also shorten the phrase to "ya" in an informal setting.

Intersting fact:

In Greek, we usually and literally say "Τι κάνεις;" = "What are you doing?", instead of "Πώς είσαι;" = "How are you?".

Vanoro Hotel: From an abandoned tobacco warehouse to a brand-new hospitality experience

Published in Hidden gems

A stone's throw from the historic Aristotelous Square, the art-deco building that hosts Vanoro reveals a new, carefully designed hospitality experience.

But what's the story behind this building?

Built in 1937, the building is a significant sample of art-deco in Thessaloniki that was designed to house the Tobacco Company of Georgios Gavriiloglou. The building functioned as a tobacco warehouse until the late 1960s.

Although it is located at 6 Dodekanisou Street, only a few steps away from the lively beat of central Tsimiski street, the building has been abandoned and left unused in recent years.

Getaway to the lavender fields of Mesimeri

Published in Getaways

While the sun gives off its warm colors, the yellow and purple shades play their own game Mesimeri.

Located just a breath away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the lavender fields of Mesimeri are– without a doubt- the most instagrammable place of Thessaloniki in June.

About Mesimeri

lavender 2

The small village of Mesimeri, created by refugees uprooted in 1922, retains all the characteristics of a beautiful traditional village. The Macedonian tombs, the old church of the Saints and Patrons of the village, Constantine and Helen, built during the Turkish occupation are of particular interest. Picturesque taverns with local delicacies, delicacies and good local wine attract not only locals but also visitors from other areas who appreciate good and traditional food.

In recent years, plant nurseries have been established in the area where aromatic and medicinal plants such as lavender is produced.

Best time to go

Lavender blooms in early summer and it is harvested by mid-July. The best time to get there, enjoy the landscape and take some really breathtaking photos is sunset.

How to get there

The area is only 30 kilometers away from the center of Thessaloniki and you can easily get there in less than half an hour. Access to the area is by car, taxi, and even by city bus. Of course, the easiest way to get there is by car, since the bus does not stop right at the point of interest.
